Little Bits and Assorted Carnage

The "Little Bits and Assorted Carnage" exhibition is a solo presentation by Chilliwack-based Métis artist Dan Daulby, featuring a comprehensive collection of his sketches, large-scale paintings, and prints. The show covers four decades of Daulby's artistic journey, highlighting how his "little bits" – numerous small sketches and doodles – serve as "unruly catalysts" for the "assorted carnage" of his more extensive and colourful artworks. This process-oriented exhibition emphasizes the transformation of ideas from initial conceptualization to vibrant, expressive art, often embracing detours and unexpected outcomes.

Daulby's work in the exhibition explores a wide array of subjects, including robots, sinners and saints, ronin (fallen Japanese samurai), crusaders, warriors, and masks. A particularly poignant series is dedicated to honouring the eight million horses, mules, and donkeys who perished during the First World War. Drawing from his Celtic and Native American ancestry, Daulby's intuitive and contemplative artistic style often incorporates satire and humour. The exhibition offers visitors a unique insight into his creative methods, revealing how preliminary scribbles evolve into complex finished pieces or sometimes lay dormant for years before demanding attention.

The exhibition is held at the Odlum Brown Art Gallery, located within the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. Admission is free, and the gallery is generally open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. An opening reception for the exhibition took place on Saturday, July 18, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
