The Sun at Midnight

Fremantle artist Kelsey Ashe presents her most ambitious exhibition to date, titled 'The Sun at Midnight,' at the Linton & Kay Galleries in Cottesloe. The collection consists of 20 intricate, large-scale screenprints created over a 12-month period. These works are based on the artist's observations of Western Australian locations—including Albany and the Perth Hills—aligned with specific moments on the celestial calendar like equinoxes and planetary conjunctions.

The artist employs a complex wax reduction technique using self-made botanical inks and minerals to create velvety, multi-layered textures. A unique feature of the exhibition is the use of photo-luminescent pigments; during the opening event, certain works are displayed under ultraviolet light to reveal glowing layers that remain hidden in daylight. This technique explores the space between shadow and light where landscape and cosmology intertwine.

Following her recent success at the 2026 Hadley’s Art Prize, where she won two awards, Ashe's new work encourages viewers to consider an expanded view of the natural world. The exhibition focuses on the convergence of mythology, astronomy, and the local environment, transforming familiar coastal and forest landscapes into scenes of cosmic contemplation.
