Angela Tiatia: Muse

The "Angela Tiatia: Muse" exhibition presents the largest collection to date of Angela Tiatia's visually stunning and politically incisive work. This world-first major survey traces the arc of her multi-disciplinary career, bringing together significant pieces from public and private collections across Australia. The exhibition explores poetic considerations of climate, capitalism, colonisation, systems of power, and shared histories.

Key highlights include the NSW gallery debut of "The Matildas" (2025), a 23-minute video portrait commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery of Australia. This work captures the presence, emotion, and mental focus of all 23 players from the CommBank Matildas FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Squad, including Newcastle's own Emily van Egmond and Clare Wheeler, and will be presented free to the public. Other featured works include "Hibiscus rosa sinensis" (2010), "The pearl" (2021), and "Narcissus" (2019), which reflects on global selfie culture.

Angela Tiatia, an award-winning artist including the 2018 Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize, has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to see the wide breadth of her incredible practice in one place, celebrating her sustained engagement with profound questions.
