Vardavar

Vardavar is one of Armenia's most beloved annual traditions, a water festival that blends Christian faith with ancient customs dating back centuries. It is observed as one of the five major feast days of the Armenian Apostolic Church, commemorating the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ, and typically takes place 14 weeks after Easter.

The festival's roots precede Armenia's adoption of Christianity in A.D. 301, tracing back to the worship of Astghik, the ancient Armenian goddess of love, beauty, and water. Astghik was believed to sprinkle water across the land as a symbol of love and renewal. Following the adoption of Christianity, the Armenian Apostolic Church incorporated the celebration into its calendar while preserving many of its traditional customs.

For the 2026 celebration in Yerevan, the festivities were notably centered in Republic Square, where the government organized a full-day concert. This event featured prominent Armenian performers such as Aram MP3, Iveta Mukuchyan, and Arsen Grigoryan, as well as international DJ Alex Gaudino. Beyond Republic Square, the tradition of water fights was upheld throughout the city, with people gathering around Swan Lake and in neighborhoods to soak friends, relatives, and strangers alike. Tourists are encouraged to join, often enthusiastically participating in this recognizable cultural tradition.
